It&#8217;s a misunderstanding that leads to calls for government mandates such as a $15 minimum wage &#8212; with the cost supposedly paid out of &#8220;greedy business&#8221; profits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">A poll asked:\u00a0<b>\u201cJust a rough guess, what percent profit on each dollar of sales do you think the average company makes after taxes?\u201d \u00a0<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">The average response: <b>36%<\/b>. That&#8217;s about <b>FIVE TIMES the actual figure<\/b>. Other polls give similar results.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">The latest average profit margin of 212 industries was 7.5%. The median profit margin was 6.5%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">To state the obvious: \u00a0Given that labor costs constitute 30% or more of the sales dollar for most industries, the cost of a $15 minimum wage will HAVE to be paid by the customers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">BTW, the latest (2018) profit margin for hated Walmart? 2.25%. That&#8217;s BEFORE Walmart paid 37.4% of its profits in federal and state corporate income taxes, leaving Walmart with an after-tax profit margin of 1.4%! See details at the bottom of this article.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Share this info with friends AND enemies. When a random sample of Americans was asked the question \u201c<strong>Just a rough guess, what percent profit on each dollar of sales do you think the average company makes after taxes?<\/strong>\u201d for the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scribd.com\/doc\/166175880\/Reason-Rupe-Poll-May-2013-Toplines\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/www.scribd.com\/doc\/166175880\/Reason-Rupe-Poll-May-2013-Toplines&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1574199892545000&amp;usg=AFQjCNE-WGZX0__l2ctm5tNHNHCxN4moZA\">\u00a0Reason-Rupe poll<\/a>\u00a0in May 2013, the\u00a0<strong>average response was 36%<\/strong>!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">That response was very close to historical results from the polling organization ORC\u2019s polls for a slightly different, but related question: What percent profit on each dollar of sales do you think the <em>average manufacturer<\/em>\u00a0makes after taxes? Responses to that question in 9 different polls between 1971 and 1987 ranged from 28% to 37% and averaged 31.6%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">How do the public\u2019s estimates of corporate profit margins compare to reality? Not surprisingly they are off by a huge margin. According to this\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/biz.yahoo.com\/p\/sum_qpmd.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/biz.yahoo.com\/p\/sum_qpmd.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1574199892545000&amp;usg=AFQjCNFbNWknW2hFDvjGv6bNUnTNx-6BDg\">Yahoo!Finance database<\/a>\u00a0for 212 different industries,\u00a0<strong>the average profit margin for the most recent quarter was 7.5% and the median profit margin was 6.5%<\/strong>\u00a0(see chart above). Interestingly,\u00a0<strong>there wasn\u2019t a single industry out of 212 that had a profit margin as high as 36%<\/strong> in the most recent quarter. The industry \u201cREIT-Diversified\u201d had the highest profit margin at 33.5% followed by just one other industry \u2013 Wireless Communications at 30.9% \u2013 with a profit margin higher than 30%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\u201cBig Oil\u201d companies (Major Integrated Oil and Gas) make a lot of profits, right? Well, that industry had a below-average profit margin of 5.1% in the most recent quarter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">And evil Walmart only made a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/q\/is?s=WMT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/q\/is?s%3DWMT&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1574199892545000&amp;usg=AFQjCNH-YsVWhoon87aR0irne3sPuES-bg\">3.1% profit margin<\/a>\u00a0in the most recent quarter (as I\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aei.org\/publication\/every-month-walmart-gets-one-profit-day-from-its-sales-while-apple-gets-7-5\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.aei.org\/publication\/every-month-walmart-gets-one-profit-day-from-its-sales-while-apple-gets-7-5\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1574199892545000&amp;usg=AFQjCNELt2g0Te9qagxcD-SGuj94yY9kLg\">reported recently<\/a>), which is less than half of the almost 7% average government take on retails sales in the form of state and local sales taxes. Think about it \u2013 for every $100 in sales for Walmart, the state\/local governments get an average of $6.88 in sales taxes (and as much $9.44 in Tennessee and $9.16 in Arizona, see\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/taxfoundation.org\/article\/state-and-local-sales-tax-rates-2011-2013\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/taxfoundation.org\/article\/state-and-local-sales-tax-rates-2011-2013&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1574199892545000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEZ1wmGYHb0foxZhO9nzt0UTZOtoQ\">data here<\/a>), while Walmart gets only $3.10 in profits!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Bottom Line<\/strong>: The public\u2019s complete overestimation of how much companies earn in profits as a share of sales explains a lot. If $36 of every $100 in sales at a company like Walmart, McDonald\u2019s, Home Depot, Ford Motor Company or a local dry cleaner or restaurant really did turn into profits, then of course those companies could afford to pay unrealistic living wages of $15 per hour, accept unreasonable demands from labor unions, provide all sorts of generous fringe benefits including weeks of paid holidays, long paid maternity leaves, and gold-plated pension programs, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">The public that believes in the fantasy-world of sky-high 36% profit margins would naturally think companies are just being greedy and stingy when they don\u2019t pay higher \u201cliving wages\u201d and have to be forced to do so through minimum wage, or living wage, legislation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">If the average person could realize that a 36% profit margin isn\u2019t even close to reality and that the typical median firm has a profit margin of only 6.5%, or almost 30 percentage points below what the public thinks is a normal profit margin, then hopefully the average person would become a little more realistic about how the business world operates. Companies aren\u2019t being stingy when they pay competitive wages, they\u2019re just trying to survive on what are sometimes razor-thin profit margins, in a competitive environment where there\u2019s not a large margin of error.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">If they\u2019re not operating efficiently and watching costs very carefully, it\u2019s pretty easy for a business to go from a 6.5% profit margin to a 0% break-even situation, and then to losses and bankruptcy \u2014 just look at the more than half a million businesses that fail every year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Another thought<\/strong>: It&#8217;s interesting to look at corporate income statements for another figure &#8212; the corporate income tax paid on profits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">The Left loves to claim that many if not most corporations pay zero income tax. A few do (using government tax credits or simply not making a profit), but most pay a pretty substantial amount.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Looking at the 2018 (hated) Walmart profit and loss statement is instructive. The company, the company earned $11.450 billion on $510.329 billion of sales. That&#8217;s 2.25% profit &#8212; LESS than the 3.1% profit in the bar chart above. In its best year in this century, Walmart made 3.5% profit on sales.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">But then on this $11.45 billion profit, Walmart paid $4.281 billion in corporate income taxes. That&#8217;s 37.4% of Walmart&#8217;s profits paid to the federal and state governments. That leaves Walmart with an after-tax profit margin of 1.4%!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">And, of course, that tax doesn&#8217;t count all the OTHER taxes paid (and deducted before &#8220;profit&#8221; is calculated) &#8212; property taxes, inventory taxes, payroll taxes, insurance taxes, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Written by Richard Rider, Chairman of San Diego Tax Fighters Here&#8217;s a\u00a0crucial misconception by the public.
