California, along with Washington, Hawaii, and Illinois, is seeking to have Trump removed from the 2020 election ballot.<\/p>\n

Washington started this trend as a means of cornering the president and forcing a release of his tax returns. Similar legislation has since spread to the three other states, and now New Jersey seems to be next.<\/p>\n

“We’re on really risky ground when we’re trying to place conditions on a federal election,” said Sen. Hans Zeiger (R), according to CBS. Meddling in the transparency of a federal election is illegal and violates not just ethical codes, but legal ones. The attempt to manipulate democratic processes by removing candidates of the opposing party from the ballot is hazardous and an act of severe political malfeasance.<\/p>\n

According<\/a> to John Bowden writing for The Hill<\/em>, \u201cThe state’s attorney general and solicitor told lawmakers in a letter this week that the proposal likely was constitutional, but analysts expect the law if passed to be challenged in federal court.\u201d<\/p>\n
