Sacramento, CA\u00a0\u2013 Today on the Senate Floor,\u00a0Senate Minority Leader Brian W. Jones<\/a>\u00a0(R-San Diego)\u00a0raised concerns about\u00a0Assembly Bill 610<\/a>, which adds new exemptions to California\u2019s $20-an-hour minimum wage hike for fast food chains. Yesterday,\u00a0media reports raised questions<\/a>\u00a0about Panera Bread\u2019s exemption from the law, indicating the exemption is linked to their franchise owner\u2019s connections and campaign contributions to Governor Newsom. \u201cMedia outlets across the country are now calling California a \u2018Pay to Play\u2019 state,\u00a0said Leader Jones.\u00a0\u201cPut simply, campaign contributions should not buy you carve-outs in legislation. That\u2019s crony capitalism. It\u2019s corrupt and unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to send a message that the Senate will not condone any \u2018Pay to Play\u2019 actions or perceptions, period,\u201d\u00a0continued Leader Jones.\u00a0\u201cAt this point, the cleanest path forward is to scrap AB 1228 entirely and start from scratch. At the very least, we should hold on moving this bill forward until there can be a thorough investigation into the allegations at hand. Unfortunately, my motion to hold the bill and move this bill to the inactive file was rejected by the Democrat majority. Their compliance in the governor\u2019s corruption is deeply troubling.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jones and all Senate Republicans did not support AB 610 on the floor today. All Senate Republicans opposed the measure,\u00a0Assembly Bill 1228<\/a>, which led to this minimum wage hike and the exemption for Panera Bread in 2023. In a further effort to stop the assault on California employers, Sen.
