Congresswoman Maria Salazar (FL-27) is the bill\u2019s co-sponsor.<\/p>\n<p>H.R. 6610 deploys numerous tools to address\u00a0the problems that create passport backlogs while bolstering the State Department Bureau of Consular Affairs\u2019 processing capabilities to streamline the application and processing experience for American travelers. The bill was highlighted in an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/house.us7.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=79f80f32deac84587357d78d9&amp;id=404b363dbb&amp;e=fc694ebc1d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/house.us7.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3D79f80f32deac84587357d78d9%26id%3D404b363dbb%26e%3Dfc694ebc1d&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1702055301580000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1dHMIQrEH-6RkHi5nCr0tr\">exclusive report by Fox News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThe collapse of the passport system represents a signature failure that upended and inconvenienced tens of millions of Americans who have the right to expect far more of their government,\u201d said Rep. Issa. This transformative approach will not only address many of the problems that led to the backlog\u00a0but also deliver modernizations that are overdue and will set the system right for decades to come.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Passport processing backlogs have been a nightmare for my constituents. It has been almost four years since the start of the pandemic,&#8221; said Rep. Salazar. &#8220;There is no excuse for forcing the American people to wait more than three months for a passport. Our legislation cleans up this mess at the State Department and puts this critical government service back on track.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<em>Passport Issuance and Backlog Elimination Act<\/em>\u00a0will:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Set a service standard of processing passport applications in 30 days after receipt of documents and creating a user-friendly experience<\/li>\n<li>Provide surge hiring authorities to solve current and future backlogs<\/li>\n<li>Mandate the expansion of the Online Passport Renewal system to accommodate first-time adult passport applications<\/li>\n<li>Mandate a text and email notification system for application status and passport applications<\/li>\n<li>Accelerate the passport renewal process by increasing use of software in passport adjudication<\/li>\n<li>Require a top-to-bottom review of the passport issuance system by the Government Accountability Office<\/li>\n<li>Accelerate the adoption of commercially available technology solutions by increasing the Bureau\u2019s collaboration with the private sector<\/li>\n<li>Increase congressional oversight over State Department modernization efforts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The bill text can be found\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/house.us7.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=79f80f32deac84587357d78d9&amp;id=f38697edeb&amp;e=fc694ebc1d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/house.us7.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3D79f80f32deac84587357d78d9%26id%3Df38697edeb%26e%3Dfc694ebc1d&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1702055301580000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3dIC_MJrzcp2FJjjoeySjP\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Darrell Issa is the Representative of California\u2019s 48th Congressional District.
