SB 58 would decriminalize wide open use of hallucinogens<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

SACRAMENTO\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Senate Minority Leader Brian W. Jones<\/a>\u00a0(R-San Diego)\u00a0sent\u00a0a letter<\/a>\u00a0to Governor Newsom urging a \u201cfriendly veto\u201d of\u00a0Senate Bill 58<\/a>\u00a0(Wiener, D-San Francisco). If not vetoed, SB 58 will decriminalize the personal use of specified hallucinogens for people over age 21 starting in January 2025. You can read the letter\u00a0here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile I am sympathetic to the potential use of some psychedelics for mental and medical health treatment, particularly for veterans with PTSD, this bill is not that,\u201d\u00a0said Leader Jones.\u00a0“It\u2019s really the state greenlighting the unsupervised, \u2018self-medicating\u2019 use of hallucinogens like magic mushrooms.\u201d<\/p>\n

Specifically, SB 58 would decriminalize the personal use of dimethyltryptamine (DMT), mescaline, psilocybin, and psilocin by people age 21 or older, however, the drugs remain illegal under federal law.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs currently written, this bill will put people\u2019s lives in jeopardy,\u201d\u00a0continued Jones.\u00a0\u201cThe Governor should issue a \u2018friendly veto\u2019 of SB 58 and leave the door open for future legislation that allows for closely supervised, therapeutic medical use of some of these drugs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Law enforcement officials and organizations throughout the state have voiced their concerns on this measure. One letter of opposition sent on behalf of the California Association of Highway Patrolmen, summed up the reality of the situation very clearly, saying \u201cSB 58 is an extremely harmful bill, because it will put people\u2019s lives at risk.\u201d<\/p>\n
